Learn how SMEs are classified and how it impacts your eligibility for financing and government support.

What is SME?

Effective Date: 1 January 2014

An SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) in Malaysia is defined based on annual sales turnover or number of employees, depending on the business sector.

The Malaysian Government introduced a revised SME definition effective 1 January 2014, approved by the National SME Development Council (NSDC).

This update raised the thresholds for sales turnover and employment, allowing more businesses—especially in the services sector—to qualify as SMEs.
